Meniere’s Disease and proper water intake
Make It Stand Out.
There is scientific evidence that regular water intake may help reduce symptoms of Meniere’s Disease. It may sound counterintuitive since there is already a fluid buildup in your inner ear. However, water can help flush out the excess water and salts from your body through urination. Regular water intake means reducing water retention in the body.
In a study focused on the influence of water intake on Meniere’s Disease symptoms, the researchers concluded: ‘Deliberate modulation of the intake of water may be the simplest and most cost-effective medical treatment for patients with MD.’ [1]
Another thing I want to remind you is that your water intake should be evenly distributed throughout the day. People sometimes forget to drink their water but try to make up for it at the end of the day and consume large amounts. This can lead to so-called ‘water intoxication,’ which may disturb electrolyte balance in your bloodstream. Try taking small regular sips throughout the day.
How much water should you drink?
A standard recommendation is the 8x8 rule- 8oz of water eight times a day. Other sources advise drinking half of your body weight (in pounds) in ounces; for example, if you weigh 150 lbs, you should drink 75 oz of water daily. The exact amount depends on your physical activity, diet, climate, etc.
To simplify it, you can look at the color of your urine to determine if you are drinking enough water- it should be pale yellow; if it is dark yellow and has a strong smell, you are likely not drinking enough water. Also, watch out for common signs of dehydration, like dry mouth, tiredness, thirst, or lightheadedness.
Tips on drinking enough water:
Make it accessible. Invest in a large water bottle (preferably glass or stainless steel) and take it everywhere.
Log it. Some people find it helpful to track their water intake.
Keep it interesting. If drinking water is boring, try herbal teas or sparkling water infused with fresh fruit and herbs- for example, lime and mint or strawberry and basil.
Set reminders on your phone to drink water.
Leave a big cup of water by your bed a drink it as soon as you open your eyes.
Drinking enough water may seem simple enough, but a recent study shows a shocking 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. [2] While dehydration can lead to medical problems for anyone, it is essential to consume enough liquids if you have MD.
Staying hydrated is the most basic yet crucial form of self-care for Meniere's Disease warriors.
