Mold and Meniere’s Disease

Mold and Meniere’s Disease

Mold and mycotoxins (toxic compounds produced by certain types of molds) are probably not the first things that come to mind when thinking about Meniere’s Disease. However, there is a connection between the two. The health dangers of mold exposure include anything from mild reactions like runny nose and coughing to severe reactions and lung infections, especially in immune-compromised people. [1] Mold can lead to a worsening of autoimmune disorders. [2] One study investigating the connection between MD and mold concluded that certain types of mold could, in fact, ‘(…) initiate or exacerbate the inflammatory response in the inner ear.’.

What to do if you have been exposed to black mold?

If you suspect you have been exposed to black mold, consult your doctor and hire a professional to remove mold from your home, especially if you see black spots, clusters, and musty smells. Use a good HEPA filter and a dehumidifier and fix leaks to avoid mold in the future. If you have been exposed to mold, support your immune system and detoxification pathways. Glutathione is a compound produced by the liver that can help detoxify mycotoxins and support the immune system. Food sources include spinach, avocados, and asparagus. However, glutathione is poorly absorbed by the human body- consider consulting your doctor about a glutathione supplement.
